about

In the past our songs that have had elements of social commentary tended to be lighthearted and tongue in cheek. This song is not like those and was written the day after the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton in early August 2019.

It was a shock to see white supremacists in August 2017 marching in Charlottesville Virginia whilst chanting Nazi slogans such as “Blood and Soil” and “Jews will not replace us.” Sadly it raises the question; Has there been “No Change” from the 1920s and 30s days of KKK cross burnings and associated hatred and violence? Contemporary military marches in North Korea and Russia, complete with goose stepping troops, look like the displays in Fascist Italy and Germany in the 1930s. Once again, has there been “No Change?”

Is there a connection between a US President saying “they’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists” and a shooter being motivated to kill 28 people in El Paso?

Intolerance, hatred and violence are widespread and presumably things will not improve as long as there is “No Change.”

lyrics

No Change
© Jeff Patch August 5, 2019

How do you feel at the end of the day?
When you know there’s been no change
Where did the ice go, why are the children in a cage?
In the light, you’re in the dark, there’s still pain

No Change, No Change, No Change

The machine, feeds on the clean, feeds on the lame
Points to the drag queen, and blames the video game
A call to arms, to lead the charge and show the way
To light the torch, to burn the cross, to spread the hate

No Change, No Change, No Change

How did you feel, when you heard the news today,
and read the posts, read the thoughts and prayers?
22 in El Paso, nine dead in Dayton
Did it bring you down, did you cry in vain?

No Change, No Change, No Change
